What are the latest games worth checking out in the Google Play Store?
Updated July 14, 2017: Gather loot and outlast other survivors in Mini DAYZ! Hit the courts in Sega's latest port, Virtua Tennis Challenge! Last but not least, check out the retro platformer action in Drop Wizard Tower!
There are thousands and thousands of games available in the Google Play Store, with more being added every month. With so much content hitting the app store, it can be damn near impossible to keep up with all the latest releases and determine which games are worth your time.
Here at Android Central, we want to help. We'll be using this space to let you know about the latest gaming releases for Android that we think deserve your attention. We'll be checking in and updating this page weekly as new games are released, so refresh often!
DayZ is a popular survival title for PC in which you're dropped in a remote location with no supplies and must scavenge around for weapons, food, and other things to help you outrun and outgun zombies and other players.
Mini DayZ is a pretty amazing pixel port of the game for Android. Just like the PC version, you start off the game with next to nothing and must explore forests, buildings, and abandoned cars around you while avoiding the ever-lurking infected. While there isn't support for multiplayer as found in DayZ, you'll run across various AI survivors and it will still be up to you to decide whether they're friendly or foe.
This game is significantly deep with crafting systems, a day/night cycle, and changing weather patterns to make things that much more realistic and challenging. With three difficulty levels to choose from, no in-app purchases, and minimal ads, this is a great game for Android! Loot up and see how long you can survive.
Virtua Tennis Challenge
Virtua Tennis Challenge is the latest Sega game released on the Google Play Store for free (with ads) as part of Sega Forever. This classic sports title from the Dreamcast era has been ported over to Android with touch controls that take some getting used to, but the game overall is as good as you remember it.
Virtua Tennis was one of the best tennis video games ever made, so this should instantly qualify it for any list of best sports games for Android. The graphics are smooth and sharp, and the gameplay is fun once you get the controls down.
The only real downer is that the free version is absolutely plagued with ads, both banner and the annoying video and tower defense demo ad. You can pay for the non-ad version of the game, which we'd highly recommend as you get interrupted after every game, and in a 3-set match of tennis that could end up being a lot of ads. We say check it out for free and if you're digging it, it's worth upgrading for an ad-free experience. Oh, and if you had bought the non-Sega Forever version, you can remove those ads for free.
Drop Wizard Tower
If you love the arcade classic Bubble Bobble, you need to check out Drop Wizard Tower. It's a colorful platformer in which your goal is to work your way up the tower to save your wizard friends and defeat the Shadow Order.
The controls are really simple, you just tap to move your Wizard left or right. It's the type of game that can easily be played with one hand. When your wizard drops down a level, he shoots out a blast of magic that stuns any enemies. Hit them to send them flying, which will also take out any other enemies in the way.
There are over 50 levels to explore with 8 boss battles to challenge you along the way. Unlock new wizards with unique stats, magic, and abilities as you progress through the game. The game is free to play with ads which can be removed with a one-time in-app purchase.
